Nine is Fine
By John Fink

For the 9th time in the past 15 MISO 45+ seasons, Honolulu United claimed the title with a 2-1 victory over a game International squad. Though International was missing league leading scorer Marco (polo), and was missing Jose Dydasco in the back, the white-clad squad put up a game effort, frustrating United numerous times when the Red-men had one opportunity after another (three posts/crossbars in this game). United controlled the ball and midfield about 75% of the game, and the intensity paid off about midway through the first half when Tony hit a bullet shot that the 'keeper could only block, and Gibby was there for a rebound to slide it home. Keith (miraculously back from a badly pulled groin two weeks ago) made a great 1 v. 1 save to ensure that United led 1-0 at halftime on a hot, windy day at the Waipio Stadium.

The 2nd half saw more pressure and chances by United, but the second goal came with 13 minutes left and is perhaps the best example of the grit displayed by this season's rendition of United. While work and family always take their toll on attendance, injuries played a large role in players missing games or bravely fighting through games, especially late in the season when a top four playoff slot was still in doubt. Goal #2 came after Gibby (leg) and Mike (hamstring) made solid tackles on sheer hustle at midfield and Mike found a streaking Malcolm heading for the goal. As the 'keeper came out past the 18-yard line to knock it away, Malcolm (pulled hamstring), stuffed the clearing attempt, calmly worked himself open, and shot it 20-yards past a flailing sweeper who tried to get in front of the net. International did score off of a corner kick (apparently, not sure if it really crossed the goal line completely) amid some confusion in front in the 90th minute, but that was it, as the whistle sounded and United had prevailed, restoring order to the universe once again.

Not only has United won 9 out of the 10 finals it has played in, it has been in every final four for the past 15-seasons, an astounding mark of quality, consistency, and medication. With good luck charm Alan Pang cheering us on in yet another final, United persevered with enough offense (30 goals in 16 games) and a steel-like defense (12 goals allowed) to cinch yet another MISO 45+ title aginst some formidable squads made up of mercenaries and youngsters. Alas, it was also a "fitting" end to the all-too-brief" career of Lars Fitter, who leaves us next week for the New York/Connecticut minor league circuit... his presence and demeanor will be missed.

Rest up, gentlemen, the fall season begins on September11...

Next Game: Fall 2010 Season Sept. 11

Team Practice: Thursdays, 5:30pm, Kapiolani Park
